Children’s Book Grant Helps Library Meet Budget Challenge for Remainder of 2011
The Friends of the Westfield Library recently donated the required $350 to receive a 2-1 matching grant from the Libri Foundation.
The Libri Foundation is a national organization whose mission is to suppliment the youth collections of rural libraries with quality, award-winning titles. The library also received a bonus $350 in science and math books in response to a statement on the grant application which indicated an overdue need to update the youth collection in these subject areas .
Library Director, Marie Boleman, explains that, “2011 is a crucial year to receive a Libri Grant. All governmental agencies have been challenged by budgetary squeezes coming from every direction, and this will keep getting tighter. The library’s 2012 budget will see a $2776 shortfall in its materials budget over 2011. The toughest challenge for libraries--and this includes the Westfield library-- is how to serve the growing number of users who need our services more than ever in difficult economic times. Libraries also have the challenge of purchasing materials in a variety of formats that are relevant to a wide range of users. For instance, although many users prefer traditional print books, a growing number are seeking audio books, electronic books, and large print books. However, once I knew we would be receiving the Libri Grant, I was able to go ahead and purchase a more adequate number of new books in these other formats without short-changing the children’s section for the last quarter of 2011.”
