2010 Teen Reading Program

Make Waves-Read
Pick up a few reading coupons at the library. Each day that you read 20 minutes or more, check off a box. Once you have checked off all five boxes, turn it in for a chance to win a weekly prize drawing. No more than one entry per week.

Read whatever you like! Magazines, books, graphic novels, newspapers. It’s an enjoyable habit that will enrich your life. Many studies show that continuing to read over summer vacation will also help you maintain your reading skill level when you return to school in the fall.

Teen Summer Book Club
You may also be interested in our summer book club. Participants will choose the titles and meet once per month. This will be a relaxed, non-judgmental discussion. Refreshments will also be served. It’s a great way to make a little extra commitment to yourself to KEEP READING! This club is for everyone, not just “bookworms.”

Call For Volunteers

Do you want to stay busy this summer? We need two more volunteer shelvers this summer. You would come in one time per week for approximately one hour. We will train you. We also need someone who is willing to work one-on-one with people who do not have any computer skills but need to learn some basics. Finally, can you help with our kid summer program at our craft and game day? Call or email for more information (608) 296-2544, director [at] westfieldlibrary [dot] org

Hungry Young Readers Program

Hungry Young Readers Mini Reading Challenge

Inspired by Eric Carle’s The Hungry Caterpillar, this opportunity allows children six and younger to use reading to turn a caterpillar in to a butterfly. It coincides with both National Library Week and T.V. Turn-Off Week as a fun way to encourage young children and their families to continue creating healthy choices and habits. Each day that you read with your child, you’ll write the names of the book or books you read on a caterpillar segment. Once you have completed five to seven days worth, return them to the library no later than Saturday, April 24th to take home your butterfly!   If you complete SEVEN days, you will be entered in to a special drawing as well. The segments will be attached to the caterpillar in the children’s area. We’ll find out how hungry the caterpillar is! To participate, pick up you packet of segments at the library desk anytime during National Library Week (April 12-17), or at the library’s booth during the No Family Left Inside Event at the High School on Saturday, April 17 from 10-2.
