CELEBRATE NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK

Communities Thrive @ Your Library

This year a special poster display features Westfield area organizations and community members who show their support for the importance of reading and libraries in their community.  Come in and see if you recognize your neighbors among them!  Folks of all ages will enjoy the library give-a-ways again this year. And, get a preview of the Summer Library Programs.

Hungry Young Readers’ Mini Reading Challenge

Inspired by Eric Carle’s The Hungry Caterpillar, this opportunity allows children six and younger to use reading to turn a caterpillar in to a butterfly. It coincides with both National Library Week and T.V. Turn-Off Week as a fun way to encourage young children and their families to continue creating healthy choices and habits. Each day that you read with your child, you’ll write the names of the book or books you read on a caterpillar segment. Once you have completed five to seven days worth, return them to the library no later than Saturday, April 24th to take home your butterfly!   If you complete SEVEN days, you will be entered in to a special drawing as well. The segments will be attached to the caterpillar in the children’s area. We’ll find out how hungry the caterpillar is! To participate, pick up you packet of segments at the library desk anytime during National Library Week (April 12-17), or at the library’s booth during the No Family Left Inside Event at the High School on Saturday, April 17 from 10-2.

Special Shadow Play Storytime Presentation

There will be a special presentation for the weekly Thursday storytime at 10AM on April 22nd. A shadow play will be performed for Mother! Mother! I Feel Sick! Send for the Doctor Quick Quick Quick! By Remy Charlip. Preschoolers get a real kick out of watching as numerous items are pulled from the child’s stomach. Afterward, they get to see how light and shadow created the illusion.

The workshop will culminate with a poetry reading in which students may choose to share their work.

TEACHER CARDS

Library teacher cards have come to the Westfield Library. Many public libraries have offered this service for years. Now, Westfield area teachers, homeschool families, daycare teachers, and other daycare providers can benefit from this service. Eligible teachers or education providers may apply for a teacher card that is separate from their personal library card. In this way, teachers can keep work and personal items separately organized. Items checked out to the teacher card need to be related to educational or classroom use. Teacher cards will not accrue fines. This way, if a lesson is not yet finished, and a teacher needs a book collection for a few more days, he will not be required to pay for the extended time needed. However, the policy will not cover extremely overdue items on a regular basis. Lost and damaged items will still be billed. Click HERE to read the complete policy.
