R.E.A.D. Dogs
What?!? Reading Dogs? In the library? Actually, youngsters read to these dogs. Early readers (K-2nd Grade) have enjoyed and benefitted from this program for the past four years. The dogs are certified therapy dogs, so they are gentle and they love to interact with people. The reading benefit comes from the relaxed and nonjudgemental atmosphere that the dogs inspire. Each dog has a handler who also doubles as a reading helper. We know it boosts reading willingness because many “reluctant readers” have eagerly signed up to practice with these dogs. First time participants also receive a beginng level book from the dog they read to that day. To participate, children must sign up at Westfield Elementary school. Home schoolers are welcome to participate as well, by calling the library directly. 608-296-2544.
