Reading dogs in the library?
Actually, kids read TO
these dogs. Every Wednesday morning the library welcomes children from
Westfield Elementary, as well as homeschoolers, to participate. Why
read to dogs? The dogs are all trained, certified therapy dogs. This
means they are calm, and enjoy being petted. This creates a relaxing
and non-judgmental environment for beginning readers. Kids can even sit
on the floor and cuddle up while reading if they choose. This program
has been motivating young readers for several years under the
coordination of Karen Robotka.
